Fluid Collection Vents

The collection and disposal of contaminated liquid waste from environments such as hospital theatres is an important process. The vessel used to collect the waste has to be vented to allow collection.  When the vessels are full the vent needs to be closed to prevent leakage. This can be achieved by either a mechanical non-return valve or a porous material that automatically seals on contact with liquid.

The porous material option is far more efficient and secure than using a mechanical arrangement.

BioVyon™ materials

  • The material used is a composite of polyethylene with a material that swells when wet. The vent or filter effectively shuts off when the fluid makes contact.

  • Moulded.

Controlled Release of Drugs

BioVyon™ is an excellent material for controlled release of drugs or chemicals.

BioVyon™ materials (a variety of BioVyon™ materials can be used)

  • Chemicals can be added directly to standard BioVyon™ material.
  • The release can also be controlled through altering the surface chemistry of the BioVyon™ or by using a composite material.

  • Moulded or sheet.

Applications

  • Artificial cigarettes with filter tips made of BioVyon™ impregnated with nicotine.
  • Other drug and chemical delivery applications.

Features and benefits

  • By control of the uniform porosity of the BioVyon™ materials, a product can be designed to hold an optimum amount of drug to release at an optimum rate.
  • By control of the surface chemistry of the BioVyon™ materials optimum release can be achieved.
  • The control release chemical can be applied in a composite material.
  • Materials used have passed appropriate regulations.

Catheter and Syringe Vents

The vents include a liquid-swelling material that prevents blood flowing outside the catheter or syringe.

The vent allows the flow within the device i.e. blood collection from a patient - but if blood for example hits the vent, the material swells and all the pores are blocked. This is important protection for clinicians.

These devices are not only used for blood collection but drug delivery, saline drips etc.
