World Class Filtration Solutions

Life Sciences and Scientific

Porvair Filtration Group manufactures an extensive range of porous metal and plastic materials to provide optimum solutions for a wide variety of applications. These materials can be purchased for OEM products or we can integrate and package into finished products.

Porvair Filtration Group is at the forefront of new material development: our range of BioVyon™ sintered porous plastic and Sinterflo® sintered porous metal materials and products have been developed to move the technical boundaries in these markets that are forever demanding new ideas.

BioVyon™ – Porvair's sintered porous plastics for the Life Science and Analytical markets

Manufactured to current good manufacturing practices (cGMP), the BioVyon™ materials are made to demanding regulatory standards as required by the FDA and USP.

The range of BioVyon™ materials is continuously expanding, driven by new market requirements.

Market sectors using Porvair's BioVyon™ materials and products include Medical, Pharmaceutical, and Analytical Chemistry.

Available for OEM customers, Porvair Filtration Group product, application and engineering specialists will work with our customers to develop products to meet their requirements, using our class 100000 cleanrooms for product assembly and employing cGMP processes. Both contract manufacture, and design and build of finished products, are also available.

Types of BioVyon™

BioVyon™ Standard

These materials are primarily polyethylene or polypropylene sintered porous plastic materials made by cGMP processes with low extractable and particle-shedding levels. Available in pore sizes from 5 to 100 micron (mean flow pore), the materials are available in sheet, roll, cut shapes or moulded. Depending on the material specification, the materials have regulatory approvals for FDA, WDA and USP requirements.

Typical applications include:

  • Filters for diagnostic sample preparation.
  • Flash chromatography supports.
  • SPE (Solid Phase Extraction) and pipette tips.
  • Bioreactor aerators.

BioVyon™ Ultraclean

These are the BioVyon™ standard materials made with ultra-low extractables. They have primarily been developed for chromatography sample preparation, solid phase extraction products where there is a requirement for low-leaching products that will not interfere with the analysis.

Typical applications include:

  • Filters for diagnostic sample preparation.
  • Flash chromatography supports.
  • SPE (Solid Phase Extraction) and pipette tips.
  • Drug filtration.
  • Inhaler and liquid-dispensing filters.
  • Sodium bicarbonate dialysis cartridges.
  • Process chromatography column support materials.

BioVyon™ Oleophobic

The naturally hydrophobic BioVyon™ standard materials can be treated to enhance its water and oil repellence throughout the internal pore structure and external surfaces of the material. This permanent treatment, which alters the surface chemistry and reduces the surface energy of the porous polymer, increases the liquid repellence of the material.

Typical applications include:

  • IV catheter and syringe vents.
  • Filters for diagnostic sample preparation.
  • Flash chromatography supports.
  • SPE (Solid Phase Extraction) and pipette tips.
  • Inhaler and liquid-dispensing filters.

BioVyon™ Hydrophilic

Naturally hydrophobic BioVyon™ standard can prevent aqueous liquids wetting out the pore structure, which can be a disadvantage for some applications in filtration and wicking. With BioVyon™ Hydrophilic, both the surface and internal structure of the material have been treated to make it hydrophilic. This permanent treatment effectively increases the surface energy to make it water-wettable.

Typical applications include:

  • Filters for diagnostic sample preparation.
  • Flash chromatography supports.
  • SPE (Solid Phase Extraction) and pipette tips.
  • Drug filtration.
  • Process chromatography column support materials.

BioVyon™ Composites

BioVyon™ Composites can be thought of as powdered active ingredients or resins immobilised within a rigid porous polymer matrix. The chemical and surface properties can be wide and varied depending on the immobilised materials. BioVyon™ Composites can offer real benefits improving the effectiveness of the active ingredients.

Typical applications include:

  • Filters for diagnostic sample preparation.
  • Flash chromatography supports.
  • SPE (Solid Phase Extraction) and pipette tips.
  • IV catheter and syringe vents.

BioVyon™ Laminates

Membranes with pore sizes typically below 1 micron are used extensively in filtration, separation and wicking applications. Due to the small pore sizes and the possible high pressure drops, they are characteristically very thin, fragile and difficult to handle.

The BioVyon™ materials make ideal supports for membranes. These and other materials can be thermally bonded to BioVyon™ without significant loss of permeability.

Typical applications include:

  • Filters for diagnostic sample preparation.
  • Flash chromatography supports.
  • SPE (Solid Phase Extraction).
  • Bioreactor aerators.

Sinterflo® – Porvair's Sintered Porous Metals

Manufactured in clean conditions, Porvair's sintered metal powder and mesh materials are the chosen solution for use in chromatography analytical equipment and columns.

The materials exhibit key properties:

  • Excellent strength for high-pressure operation.
  • Excellent temperature resistance.
  • Uniform pore size distribution, providing uniform flow.
  • Inert and clean - will not add contamination.

Typical applications include:

  • Support the active media in chromatography columns.
  • Filter solvents used in the process to protect pumps and equipment.
  • Flow restrictors to control pressure and flow rates of purge gases.

Using Porvair's advanced Sinterflo® frits enhances peak resolution essential in critical analysis applications.
